Project overview
A whole-building renovation of the YWCA Hotel on Beatty Street in downtown Vancouver, delivered by Hilson Construction as general contractor over one year. Guest rooms, public areas and core building systems were upgraded while the hotel remained operational.
The need
YWCA Metro Vancouver needed a full-scale renovation of its approximately 155,000 sq. ft. hotel facility on Beatty Street in downtown Vancouver, upgrading guest-facing spaces and the core building infrastructure behind them. The hotel remained operational throughout, serving guests, staff and community users, so the work had to be delivered around a functioning building.
Scope of work
- Guest room refresh with durable new flooring and improved lighting
- Modernized lobby and elevator lobbies
- Common areas and guest corridors
- HVAC system upgrades, including energy-efficient equipment
- Plumbing upgrades and water-efficient fixtures
- Electrical and mechanical system upgrades
- Improved insulation
- Environmentally conscious interior finishes
What made it demanding
Renovating an operational hotel means guest rooms, corridors and public areas can only be taken out of service in controlled blocks, while mechanical, plumbing and electrical upgrades reach into every part of the building. Over a one-year construction period, guests still needed a safe, functional and welcoming facility every day.
How Hilson delivered
Hilson phased the work carefully so that each block of rooms, corridors and common areas was renovated and returned to service while the rest of the hotel kept operating. Building-system upgrades were coordinated with the interior work, and sustainable solutions were integrated throughout, including energy-efficient HVAC, water-efficient fixtures, improved insulation and environmentally conscious finishes.
What was delivered
The completed renovation delivers a safer, more welcoming and operationally efficient facility with a modernized lobby, refreshed guest rooms and updated infrastructure, improving the experience for guests, staff and the broader community. For hotel owners, non-profit operators and building managers, it is a whole-building renovation of approximately 155,000 sq. ft. delivered inside an operating facility.
